There are so many amazing books and authors that is very difficult to narrow it down. Here are some of our favorite reads from African American authors this year.
Title: Becoming
Author: Michelle Obama
Overview: A graduate of Princeton University & Harvard Law School, shared her private story through an endearing, insightful and honest account of her life leading up to being the first lady.
Title: The Wedding Date
Author: Jasmine Guillory
Overview: A Stanford Law School grad, she has written from Cosmopolitan and The Toast prior to releasing her first book. This fictional story follows two people who get trapped in an elevator together. This romance is an easy read, that is funny and effortless. Follow up books include The Proposal and The Wedding Party.
Title: Rise & Grind
Author: Daymond John
Overview: Co-founder of FUBU clothing line and investor on the popular TV Show, Shark Tank, this book is a follow up to his Power of Broke where you’ll be motivated by his powerful advise on how to maximize your time by making the best use of every moment. The book helps walk you through setting up your vision, goals and breaking them down so they are attainable.
Title: The Hate U Give
Author: Angie Thomas
Overview: Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this book portray a young teenager girl who witnesses the policy unjustly shoot her best friend. Although it’s a fictional tale, it humanizes the voices behind one of the most significant talking points of the past few years. There is a movie, however as in most cases the book is better.
Title: Down the River Unto the Sea
Author: Walter Mosley
Overview: This award-winning crime-fiction author has published more than 40 books. This is an excellent thrilled that hooks you from the beginning. Likeable characters with intrigue and entanglements that weave among one another, this book is far from mundane.
