A day in Roatan, Honduras
Roatan island is one o
f a kind. It’s only about 40 miles long, 2.5 miles wide at some points and doesn’t have even one traffic light. The culture of Roatan is considered to be a melting pot and there are a lot of different cultures represented here. It contains coral reefs, beaches and plenty of activities to keep you busy. Many cruisers are delighted to spend the day in Roatan. If you are here, this is a sample itinerary of some of the things that you should do.
Coxen Hole
This may be your first stop once getting off of the cruise ship. It consists of a very small shopping mall and a few restaurants. There isn’t much to do here and many tourists opt to go outside of the port gates to buy authentic fare and to browse at some of the shops. It is a good place though to grab a quick bite to eat and a drink.
Half Moon Beach Or West Bay Beach
However, if you want to do some snorkeling or kayaking to see the coral reefs, visit Half Moon Beach. You can rent these items at nearby gift shops or dive shops so you don’t have to bring your own. As a matter of fact, you will find that the waters are crystal clear so it’s pretty easy to see the underwater world down below. West Bay Beach is considered to be the best beach for families as the water tends to be fairly shallow and a lot of tropical fish can be seen right from the shore.
Mahogany Bay
This is one of the more popular places to visit. Even so, there are numerous restaurants and shops to stop in. There’s also live music and even a chairlift where you can catch unlimited rides to and from Mahogany beach for $5 per day. Onsite there’s also an ATM and a place to rent cars.
The Butterfly Farm
This is a great place for families to visit. There are hundreds of different butterflies here that consist of up to 20 different species. In fact, children often love walking through the 3,000 square foot enclosure to see them. Onsite there are also toucans, hummingbirds and parrots. Tours are available everyday of the weeks, except for Saturdays.
Horseback Riding
This is a very memorable trip. Participants go on a horseback ride along the hills or the beach. Therefore, children or beginners can participate as there will be experienced equestrians available to guide the tour.
