A Day in Beautiful Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

A Day in Beautiful Half Moon CayHalf Moon Cay is a popular stop for Holland America cruises and Carnival Cruise Line. Your ship will anchor just off shore and you will take about a 10 minute tender ride to the island. Once there you will be able to choose from several different activities. Even though you will only have a limited amount of time to see this area, you can still do a lot. If you will be in Half Moon Cay for just one day, this is what you should do.

The Welcome Center And Beach

Once you reach the tender pier you will see the Fort San Salvador Welcome Center. This is a great place to go to learn about the area and have some of your questions answered. After leaving the welcome center you will see a beach that’s filled with powdery sand and private cabanas. This is a great area to spend a little bit of time at the end of the day before heading back to your cruise ship.

The Bonefish Lagoon

At 700 acres in size, Bonefish Lagoon is where you can find Stingray Cove. It features quite a few Southern stingrays as well as watercraft and kayak rentals and a bar. If you don’t want to go too far from the port and are just looking for something to do for a few hours, this is a great place to go.

The Straw Market

Anyone who’s ever been to the Straw Market before will tell you that it’s an experience. Here you will find a variety of items, mostly made out of straw. There are quite a few items to choose from and purchases need to be made with cash. They accept both U.S. and Bahamian dollars.

Food And Drinks

When it comes to food and drinks there are several options right around the port. The Tropics Restaurant features a barbeque buffet that consists of things like ribs, hot dogs and hamburgers in an open air setting. Captain Morgan’s Bar, which looks like a pirate ship, is right next to the Tropics Restaurant and features a variety of drinks.

Hiking

The entire island is only around 2,400 acres. Many visitors just like to hike around it and do some exploring. One of the nice things about it’s small size is that no matter where you go you will never be farther than walking distance from the port.
